What is Subvastus Muscle-Sparing Total Knee Replacement?

The quad sparing subvastus approach for total knee arthroplasty is a way to access the knee joint without any cutting of muscle or tendon. In a traditional knee replacement, the quadriceps tendon is cut and fully detached from the patella bone or kneecap, and then repaired with sutures at the end of the surgery. This leads to increased pain and weakness after knee replacement surgery. To prevent this, Dr. Minor uses the quad sparing subvastus approach.

How is the Subvastus Muscle-Sparing Total Knee Replacement performed?

In this approach, instead of cutting the muscle off of the bone, Dr. Minor goes to the side of the muscle and gently lifts it out of the way instead of cutting it. This allows for less pain, more strength, and a more rapid recovery after surgery. When combined with the revolutionary calipered kinematic alignment technique that Dr. Minor uses for the remainder of the surgery, the end result is a knee replacement done without any cutting of tendon muscle or ligaments and one that recovers more quickly and with less pain.

What are the Advantages of the Subvastus Approach Sparing Total Knee Replacement?

Some of the advantages of the Subvastus approach include:

  • Enhanced Postoperative Recovery: You can experience reduced pain and improved range of motion due to minimal soft tissue disruption.
  • Preservation of Quadriceps Strength: By sparing the vastus medialis, the approach helps maintain your knee's extensor mechanism, crucial for activities like walking and climbing stairs.
  • Reduced Rehabilitation Time: Early mobilization is typically possible, facilitating a quicker return to daily activities.
  • Minimized Risk of Complications: The approach reduces the likelihood of extensor lag, infection, and wound healing issues compared to more invasive methods.
